Medford Travel Tips

  • Plan a day trip up to Crater Lake National Park, a two-hour drive northwest of Medford. The crystal-blue volcanic lake and the surrounding national parklands are open year-round, but they are best visited mid-April through mid-November to avoid heavy winter snows.
  • Sip some of the state's fine pinot noir and pinot gris at one of Medford's 35 wineries. An Oregon Wine & Farm Tour costs $69 and provides you with a driver to several tastings.
  • Hook up with Carters Guide Service downtown and fish for chinook and coho salmon or steelhead trout on the Rogue, Umpqua, or Elk rivers—all within easy driving distance.
  • Tee off at Centennial Golf Club, the newest course in the Rogue Valley. The par-72 course features 73 bunkers over its 7,300-yard layout. Tune up at their state-of-the-art practice facility before you head out.

Jacksonville and Medford Travel Guide

Jacksonville is a snapshot from southern Oregon's past. After the Great Depression it became a forgotten backwater, and more than 80 buildings from its glory years as a gold-mining boom town in the mid-1800s were left untouched. The entire town has been restored to much the way it looked in the late 19th century, thanks in large part to the photos of pioneer photographer Peter Britt, who moved to Jacksonville in 1852 and operated the first photographic studio west of the Rockies. His photos of 19th-century Jacksonville have provided preservationists with invaluable 150-year-old glimpses of many of the town's historic buildings. Where Britt's home once stood, visitors now attend the performances of the Britt Festivals, another southern Oregon cultural binge that rivals the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in its ability to stage first-rate entertainment.
