Columbus Travel Tips

  • During the college football season, Ohio State home games funnel some 100,000 people into Ohio Stadium, raising the population of the city by 13 percent.
  • Think outside of the traditional baseball/basketball/football mind-set and go see one of Columbus' other top-notch, if slightly less mainstream, sports teams. The Columbus Crew is one of Major League Soccer's original teams, and the National Hockey League expansion team the Columbus Blue Jackets made the playoffs for the first time in 2009.
  • Take your loved one on a romantic nighttime canoe trip up the Hocking River. Tours run from Hocking Valley Canoe Livery in Logan, Ohio, twice each month.
  • Horse culture in Columbus goes back to the pioneer days, when westward-bound explorers would gear up in town. Two major horse shows—the All American Quarter Horse Congress in October and the Equine Affaire in April—attract thousands of equine aficionados from around the globe.
  • Learn to cook at the Chef Series Cooking Class at North Market. You'll be treated to a fine meal from one of the city's best chefs, and be able to ask questions during the presentation.

It was not the original capital, but its central location in the heart of Ohio and between the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers helped develop its status as a shipping port. By the late 1880s, there were almost two hundred factories in operation and brewing companies established by the German immigrant population. Read More
