Cape Hatteras National Seashore Travel Tips

  • Explore laid-back Ocracoke Island, where you can beachcomb, paddle, and hike in quiet seclusion. Camp at the island's 137-site campground, nestled among cedars and sand dunes.
  • Climb the towering Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest in America, mid-April through early October.
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a 72-mile stretch of the Outer Banks from Nags Head to Ocracoke Island. The waters off these barrier islands serve as an outdoor adventure paradise where the fun is powered by the sun, sea, and wind.
  • For family fun, Cape Point and Frisco offer close access to ice cream shops, go-carts, and other kid-friendly fare. If you're here to connect with your partner, spouse, maker, or inner child, try Ocracoke.
  • Bird lovers will find nirvana at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge located on the north end of Hatteras Island. The refuge is situated on the eastern flyway and lures some 265 species of birds that seek out this oasis.

Since 1870, the light has been a beacon for ships passing through these treacherous waters, which have claimed more than 1,500 victims by means of foul weather, strong rip currents, and shifting shoals. This is where the ironclad Union gunboat Monitor went down during a storm in December 1862. Read More
