Wilmington Travel Tips

  • Walk the deck of Battleship North Carolina, once a part of the U.S. Pacific fleet during World War II and now a popular local attraction.
  • Wander through the 230-block historic district, including the picturesque downtown waterfront. Along the way you'll find a variety of restaurants, unique shops, and art galleries.
  • Apply sunscreen and head to one of the Wilmington area's fabulous beaches, including popular Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach.
  • The Wilmington area is about the only place where you can still find the carnivorous venus flytrap. You might spot some at the Nature Conservancy's 15,907-acre Green Swamp Preserve, about 35 miles west of downtown.
  • Stargaze in one of the East Coast's top film-making locales. Shows made in and around the area include Nights in Rodanthe, Blue Velvet, Sleeping With the Enemy, The Hudsucker Proxy, and TV's Dawson's Creek.

Wilmington Overview

As the chief port of North Carolina, Wilmington is a major retail, trade, and manufacturing center, but tourism is looming larger than ever in its economy. Known first as New Carthage and then as New Liverpool, New Town, and Newton, this city was given its present name in 1739 in honor of the earl of Wilmington. Technically, it isn't even on the coast; it's inland a bit, at the junction of the Cape Fear River's northeast and northwest branches. Despite the treacherous shoals that guarded the mouth of Cape Fear when explorers first arrived in 1524, upriver Wilmington developed into an important port for goods shipped to and from Europe during colonial days.
