  • Visit in late January for the enthusiastic races and festivities of the Bay of Islands’ Sailing Week Regatta.
  • The small town of Opua is the yachtie anchorage for the Bay of Islands. If you want to crew on any private boats heading to the South Pacific, many vessels leave this area in the autumn months of March and April.
  • Hop aboard an old-fashioned square-rigged tall ship on the R. Tucker Thompson, leaving from Paihia. You can help hoist the sails and even swing from the yardarm.

About a three-hour drive north of Auckland is one of New Zealand's most stunning (and warmest) regions: the Bay of Islands. The name is a misnomer, since it's actually a number of bays and inlets dotted with over 140 islands—meaning, a lot of beaches.
