  • The area just north of the Bay of Islands is a Mecca for secret kiteboarding spots. One of the best—and better known—spots for kiteboarding in New Zealand is the Karikari Peninsula, with an array of wind directions and wave conditions.
  • The best kiteboarding lessons in the area are run by the Airzone Kitesurfing School on the Karikari Peninsula in Doubtless Bay. They offer one-day or multiple-day courses for all skill levels.

About a three-hour drive north of Auckland is one of New Zealand's most stunning (and warmest) regions: the Bay of Islands. The name is a misnomer, since it's actually a number of bays and inlets dotted with over 140 islands—meaning, a lot of beaches.
