Tiny and secluded, nestled between Long Island's two forks, Shelter Island has for centuries been a sheltered getaway spot. Laid-back and barely developed, you'll find some nice beaches, secluded coves great for boating and swimming, and a relaxed atmosphere that's unlike anything on the North or South forks. More than one-third of Shelter Island is owned by the Nature Conservancy and maintained as a nature preserve. There's lots of lush greenery and dense woods all across the island; the only "townlike" area is around Shelter Island Heights on the island's northwest corner. One hotel, a couple antiques shops, a coffee shop, and a couple of restaurants are really all that's here.
