New York City Travel Tips

  • Pay what you can afford at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (suggested donation is $20). Don't miss the European tapestries and architecture in The Cloisters.
  • Take the kids out to a ball game at one of the city's two new baseball stadiums—Yankee Stadium in the Bronx or the Mets' Citi Field in Queens.
  • Eat lunch outdoors at Strawberry Fields in Central Park. It was designed by Bruce Kelly as a memorial to John Lennon, who was shot outside of the Dakota apartment building just blocks away.
  • Pull up a free beach chair provided by local businesses and sit in Times Square. The city closed five blocks of Broadway to car traffic in summer 2009, giving more elbow room to the some 350,000 people who parade through the area every day.
  • Buy tickets online ahead of time for the Empire State Building. It'll save you the hassle of standing in two lines before taking the elevator up to the best views of the city. You can now also prebook tickets for the recently reopened Statue of Liberty crown, though demand will outstrip supply on most days as it's only open to 240 visitors each day.

New York City Travel Guide

It's cleaner than it ever was. The number of hotels, restaurants, and clubs keeps growing and gets better every year. This rebirth has helped bring in over 44 million tourists in 2006 and even more are projected in the next few years. Everything seems rosy. Why then, are some of us worried about our city? With this boom, those of us who have been here a long time and have seen the changes from a city in need to what it is today, fret that this renaissance is one without character. We worry that with a Starbucks on every corner and new, glass and steel condos sprouting like mushrooms at the expense of an old favorite bookstore or our local Cuban/Chinese joint, that we are slowly losing our identity; the fear being that we will become like everycity USA. • I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has spent Christmas in New York City. I am planning on arriving Christmas Eve, the 24th at 1:50 and staying till the 26. We will be leaving at 5:00 on the 26th. I have 2 kids 22 and 17 and the hubby of course. Does anyone know what would be open on the 24th and 25th or how I can find out? Any suggestions on good tours or things to do are also appreciated. Have a good one and thanks for your help.

  • We would like to take our 4 children to New York prior to Christmas and need a very affordable hotel. We want to drive and want advice on hotels and the best deals to tour the sights. We can stay in New Jersey if that is the best way to go. Please also tell us what you would see in a weekend.
