Taos Active and Adventure Travel Tips

  • The Taos area is a hiker's paradise. It's the perfect base for everything from meadow-and-pine-forest strolls to strenuously rugged backcountry and above-timberline treks, all offering the rewards of the big-sky vistas unique to the southwest.
  • Wheeler Peak, the highest point the state, offers hardy alpine hikers breathtaking views of pine- and pinon-covered mountains rolling out in every direction, and the Taos Plateau is visible in the distance along the way. Neither technical nor particularly difficult, the 14-mile hike still requires stamina and a full day.
  • Taos and its surroundings offer abundant opportunities for some of the best road biking in the southwest. Note, though, that Taos sits at 7,000 feet and that some of the rides head up into the high country from there. Additionally, some of those roads are not only steep but also narrow. To ride the Taos area, you need to be in very good shape and very cautious.
  • The town of Taos itself is rather flat, as well as quite spread out, making it great for exploring by bicycle. In fact, it's an excellent way to see the town's dozen or so museums, including the Kit Carson Home and Museum just off of the downtown plaza and the Millicent Rogers Museum north of town.
