Cape May Camping Travel Tips

  • Commercial campgrounds abound near Cape May—most cater to families. Campground amenities typically include swimming pools, supervised activities for children, movies, and activities such as hoe-downs, teen dances, campfire sing-alongs, and even beauty pageants.
  • Don't hesitate to ask if a campground has particular amenities. There are a lot of options here: While many campgrounds tout activities for families, others are more nature- oriented and have features such as freshwater lakes for fishing and canoeing.
  • For a close-to-nature experience, try nearby Belleplain State Park. This forested park of young pine, oak, and Atlantic white cedar contains 169 tent and trailer sites as well as two group sites and 14 lean-tos for up to six people.
  • New Jersey's famous Pine Barrens is located just north of Belleplain State Park and north and inland from Cap May. Covering 1.1 million acres, this heavily forested area is the largest parcel of open space between Boston, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia. It is well worth a day trip for hiking or boating; or stay overnight in one of the area's many public (state park and forest) or private campgrounds.

Visiting Cape May is like taking a step back in time to the glory days of the Jersey shore, before frenetic amusement piers and summer-break college crowds overtook the scene. Even at the height of the summer season, the town stays relaxed and friendly; after a lazy day at the beach, most folks' big activity is to retire to a wide veranda, glass of iced tea in hand, to sit back and watch the world stroll by.
