  • Know who you are—"Barney" is Jersey Shore slang for those from New York and its New Jersey suburbs; "Shoobee" is the term for South Jersey/Philadelphia-based visitors (the name comes from the shoebox lunches served on the inbound train in the 1930s).
  • Rent bikes for a quicker tour of the Boardwalk. Bike-rental stands are available on nearly every corner.
  • Explore the beach towns to the south, in order: Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Wildwood, and Cape May.
  • Whether you're gambling or not, sign up to get a casino card at any of the Boardwalk hotels. They'll get you discounts on parking and dining, as well as frequent player points at the tables.

One of America's oldest seaside resorts, Atlantic City is most famous these days as a weekend gambler's mecca. It's the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas, and home to many of the same names: Caesars, Bally's, Sands, the Tropicana. Tourists come by the millions (more than 35 million of them, to be exact) to try their luck at the city's 12 casinos, 9 of which line the world's first oceanfront boardwalk, opened in 1870.
