Merrimack River State Forest Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • Flowing south through southern New Hampshire, the Merrimack River holds many species in its lower reaches, including small- and largemouth bass as well as rainbow and brook trout.
  • Angle for stocked Atlantic salmon. Spring is the best time, though there is a fall stocking. A permit is required and you may keep only tagged fish.
  • Since many launches have been established, fly anglers not only fish by wading but also by drift boat, canoe, and kayak.
  • Lake Winnipesaukee feeds into the Merrimack and has 72 square miles of angling pleasure. Angle for landlocked salmon, bass, and rainbow and lake trout. Fishing charters are available.
  • Other important tributaries for anglers include the Souhegan, Pemigewasset, Contoocook, and Winnipesaukee rivers. They all offer quality coldwater fishing.
