Saba Scuba Diving Travel Tips

This tiny five-square-mile island, which is part of the Netherlands Antilles along with Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten, was set up for divers early on: The Saba Marine Park, established more than 20 years ago, rings the entire island, reaches to a depth of 200 feet, and encompasses around 30 dive sites.
Divers best know Saba for its pinnacles. Offshore seamounts at sites like Shark Shoals and Third Encounter feature dramatic submarine spires, reaching from the depths like skyscrapers in the water. Proximity to open ocean means these dives offer a chance to see big creatures. Jacks and reef sharks commonly circle the pinnacles.
While the offshore pinnacles offer wild, deep dives, Saba's nearshore sites, such as Hot Springs, boast shallower depths and an equally impressive collection of marine life. Many of these sites also feature underwater lava tubes, caves, and other rock formations, not to mention geothermic vents—all remnants of Saba's volcanic past.

An extinct volcano with no beaches or flat land, cone-shaped Saba is 13 sq. km (5 3/4 sq. miles) of rock carpeted with lush foliage-like orchids, giant elephant ears, and Eucharist lilies. At its zenith, Mount Scenery, it measures 870m (2,854 ft.). Under the sea, the volcanic walls continue a sheer drop to great depths, making for some of the most panoramic diving in the Caribbean.
