You need a ticket, valid for just a single day, to visit Durbar Square. It's worth getting a visitor's pass if you are going to be in Kathmandu for a few days.
You don't have to stay in a hotel with a swimming pool to make use of one. Hotels like the Hyatt Regency allow non-guests to use their fitness facilities for a charge.
Traffic pollution in Kathmandu can be overwhelming at times. If anyone in the family suffers from respiratory problems, consider packing a face mask.
