Glacier National Park Horses and Riding Travel Tips

  • Drive northwest of Babb, along Highway 17, to the trailhead on Slide Lake, just south of customs. This is grand pack-trip territory, and a horse camp at the foot of Elizabeth Lake (11 miles in along the Belly River Trail) makes a great base of operations to explore the park's craggy northeast corner.
  • The 13-mile Quartz Lake Loop begins at Bowman Campground in the park's northwest corner. Ride the trail clockwise to minimize the incline along the way, and enjoy views of the Livingston Range along with good trout fishing in Middle and Lower Quartz.
  • Since the gorgeous Highline Trail along the Continental Divide is closed to horse parties from Logan Pass to the Granite Park Chalet, many pack trips access the remote and scenic Fifty Mountain region via the Flattop Mountain, a 12-mile route from Packer's Roost along a partially burned mountain crest.
  • Walton Ranger Station, along Highway 2 east of Essex, offers access to the less-visited southern region of Glacier. Take an easy, loping ride 17 miles through thick Douglas-fir forest and gentle foothills to camp at the very remote Lake Isabel below the 8,600-foot Virgil Peak.
  • You'll find stables that lead day trips at Many Glacier, Lake Macdonald, East Glacier, and Apgar.
