  • They're not scary, but Missoula's two nearby ghost towns warrant a visit. Garnet and Coloma, both 30 miles east of town, were gold-mining boom-and-bust villages where 19th-century wooden houses still stand.
  • Ski or ride at Montana Snowbowl, a 2,000-vertical-foot local's hill just a half-hour north of downtown.
  • Break out your dry flies and go in search of big trout on Missoula's gold-medal streams. Outfitters run trips on Rock Creek, Clark Fork, and the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, and Missouri rivers.
  • Steam in the Lolo Hot Springs south of town, where a new fine-dining restaurant now complements the clean, upscale natural pools.

  • Are there moderate hiking paths into some of the Lewis & Clark historical area? My husband and I are planning a vacation to Missoula for our 40th wedding anniversity. We would like to do some hiking in an area that involves some Lewis & Clark history.
