Missoula Snowmobiling Travel Tips

  • Head 30 miles east of Missoula on Highway 200 to Garnet Range Road to pick up the 31.5-mile Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail, one of the few snowmobile trails in the country to run down a main street in a preserved ghost town.
  • Snowmobilers congregate at Lolo Hot Springs, 30 miles southwest of Missoula in the Lolo National Forest, to access 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails (and, if necessary, to rent sleds). The trails crisscross the forest on either side of the Montana-Idaho border.
  • With a warming hut, visitor center, and often more than 60 inches of snow in January, Lolo Pass on the Montana-Idaho border is popular place to start a ride or take a break for lunch and coffee.
  • The Missoula-Lolo area's unofficial sledder's downtime headquarters is The Jack Saloon off of Highway 12. This giant log cabin has burgers, cold beer, and sled-in access from Grave Creek Road.

  • Are there moderate hiking paths into some of the Lewis & Clark historical area? My husband and I are planning a vacation to Missoula for our 40th wedding anniversity. We would like to do some hiking in an area that involves some Lewis & Clark history.
