Bozeman Fishing Travel Tips

  • Bozeman anglers looking for a short float on the lower Madison should put in at Beartrap Canyon, about 30 miles west of town on Highway 84. Fish the Madison in the early and late season, when cooler waters keep trout from getting lethargic.
  • One of Montana's very few remaining grayling populations thrives in Ennis Lake, behind the Madison Dam. Find it 45 miles southwest of town along Highways 84 and 287.
  • Put a line in East Gallatin River, the local favorite just north of town on Highway 10. Look for the bridge right after the first railroad overpass a mile or so out of town. The slow, narrow river hides a few deep pools with wily, sizeable browns.
  • Discover amazing float fishing on the upper ten miles of the Gallatin, below its confluence with the East Gallatin between Manhattan and the Missouri Headwaters State Park. Access the river at the Gallatin Forks for browns and mid-sized rainbows in quantity, as well as rich backcountry marshland along the banks.
