Boundary Waters Canoe Area Snowshoeing Travel Tips

  • Top out in Minnesota by ascending 2301-foot Eagle Mountain. The seven-mile round-trip hike can be a little gnarly in the winter, so navigation is key when the trail is snowed under. Take County Road 4 to Forest Road 170, and follow the signs.
  • Explore the eastern terminus of the rugged Kekekabic Trail, near the end of the Gunflint Trail at mile 48. The Kekekabic is tough to follow in the summer and even tougher in the winter, but the six-mile out-and-back hike to Bingshick Lake is worth the effort.
  • A short mile-and-a-half snowshoe hike to Magnetic Rock makes possible moose sightings and glimpses of the eponymous monument-shaped and compass-confounding fieldstone. Find the trailhead on the east side of the Gunflint Trail, just beyond the trailhead for the Kekekabic Trail.
  • A classic BWCA winter camping route is along the Angleworm Trail, off the Echo Trail from County Road 88, north of Ely. The 14-mile loop ascends several ridges overlooking Angleworm Lake and passes numerous campsites along its shore.
  • The Pincushion Mountain trail system, while not technically in the BWCA, is on the way back to Grand Marais when you're coming in from the Gunflint Trail. The recreation area has a small snowshoe loop of its own, but it's the public warming house that's most inviting after spending a day on the trails.

That have been looking at doing a wilderness retreat in the BWCA region. We are looking for a great spot to drive to, camp, do some hiking and sight seeing. And potentially canoe and fish a little. Basically a get away...
