Detroit Travel Tips

  • Visit the home/galleries of the weirdest outdoor artists in the country. The Heidelberg Project centers around an outlandishly decorated house in an area of town hit hard by the 1967 race riots. More recently, artists Mitch Cope and Gina Reichert bought a house in the rundown Hamtramck neighborhood—heretofore known for its drug dealers and immigrant population—and painted it pink. Their Power House Project encourages other artists to do the same. Plan your visit for daylight hours.
  • Hamtramck is also legendary as a launching point for Detroit's indie rock scene. Every March, the Hamtramck Blowout features outdoor concerts by local legends like The White Stripes and Eminem.
  • The Detroit Institute of Art features more than 100 galleries and houses the second largest municipally owned collection of art in the country. A $158 million renovation completed in 2007 added another 77,000 square feet to the Woodward Avenue complex.
  • Dance in the streets at the Motown Historical Museum, in the original Hitsville U.S.A. house on West Grand Boulevard. Exhibits pay homage to The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, and the rest of Motown Records' legendary acts.
  • Drive around Grosse Pointe, the city's nicest neighborhood and home to a yacht club and mansions once owned by the Ford family. It's proof that the city wasn't always on hard times.

Detroit Travel Guide

Detroit rolled out the red carpet when Super Bowl XL came to town in January 2006, and the city's renaissance continues. Dozens of new restaurants and clubs dot the downtown landscape; abandoned buildings have been replaced with high-rise luxury condos; Campus Martius Park, in the heart of Detroit, draws crowds with open-air music stages in the summer and an outdoor ice rink in winter; and the city's riverfront has been beautified with a wooded Riverwalk. To be sure, Detroit's old favorites—the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village, the Motown Historical Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts—are still worth visiting. But these days, visitors to the Motor City can't help but be impressed by all that's new. Read More
