Swim, dive, snorkel, or windsurf at the National Maritime Park, part of the Grand Mayan Reef.
Enjoy Puerto Morelos' excellent restaurants and one of the best English-language bookstores in the area.
Mangrove swamps line the edges of town, just minutes from an exotic botanical garden and zoo.
Buses pass the highway turnoff, but don't enter the town center more than half an hour west. A taxi between town and the highway costs about US$2.50.

My boyfriend and I are going to Mexico for new year and trying to decide where to go. We are flying into Cancun and are considering Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. Ideally we want somewhere that isn't ridiculously touristy but has the option of a bit of nightlife if we want it. Would Puerto Morelos fit this? I get the impression there aren't many bars but just a few would do! We aren't looking for a completely 'get away from it all' location but somewhere in between. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
