  • Visit Isla Holbox (pronounced hole-BOASH), where the water is warm and turquoise-blue.
  • See the island's main attraction: whale sharks. These harmless giants congregate ten miles east of Holbox from June to September. Several area hotels book tours starting at US$80.
  • Leave civilization behind. This tiny fishing village has no ATM, no cell phone service, uses golf carts in lieu of cars, and can only be reached by ferry.
  • Bring plenty of insect repellant—sandflies and horseflies can be vicious.
