Martha's Vineyard Travel Tips

  • Visit the island off season, in May or October, when the weather is often mild and the crowds have cleared out.
  • Rent a kayak, canoe, or small sailboat from one of the many outfitters on the island and get a different perspective from the water.
  • For great lighthouse views, start from the dock at Vineyard Haven and look for Main Street. Then follow the road two miles to West Chop and the West Chop Lighthouse.
  • See a 46-foot skeleton of a whale at Nantucket's Whaling Museum.
  • Get off the beaten path and check out the beaches owned by the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank. Many require hikes or kayaks to reach, but they are far from the partying masses on South Beach.
  • Buy a Black Dog T-shirt if you must, but don't miss out on breakfast at the actual Black Dog restaurant in Vineyard Haven. Daily omelet and pancake specials will give you a story to go with your souvenirs.
  • Take the bus out to Menemsha—famous as the setting for Jaws—with picnic baskets and beach chairs in tow for one of the best sunsets anywhere on the East Coast. Feel free to applaud with the locals.
  • Skip the mopeds. Roads here are extremely narrow and, especially up-island, don't have bike lanes. Many tourists get hurt every year on these two-wheeled death traps.
  • Leave trinkets, stones, or flowers on the grave of John Belushi, located in Abel's Hill Cemetery in Chilmark. His family still owns a place in the area.
