Cape Cod Camping Travel Tips

  • Campgrounds, both public and private, abound on the Cape, but there is no camping at the Cape Cod National Seashore itself. Typically, the private campgrounds offer more amenities, but public campgrounds are more isolated and closer to nature. Regardless of where you camp, you are likely to encounter poison ivy and ticks. Learn to identify the former and search for the latter. Long pants and bug spray are a must.
  • Nickerson State Park contains two thousand acres and 418 campsites. In addition to camping, the park offers boating, bicycling, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, cross-country skiing, and swimming.
  • Other public parks that offer camping include Scusset Beach State Park and Shawme-Crowell State Forest (both in Sandwich), and South Cape Beach State Park in Mashpee.
  • Washburn Island, part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, is a special island camping experience, but you must have your own boat to get there. (Launch from White's Landing in Falmouth.) Family and group sites are available; you need to reserve them in advance. There is no potable water on the island, so bring your own. The beach is a nesting site for the endangered piping plover.

  • We live in Toronto and I would like to take my family for a week's vacation in Cape Cod this September. My wife and I have a 4 year old boy who loves all things related to the ocean (whales, sharks, rays, coral etc.) so I thought the Cape might be a good idea. Any recommendations are welcome. Ideally, on the ocean with reasonable driving access to sites and activities.
