Berkshires Travel Tips

  • Massachusetts boasts the sixth largest state park and forest system in the United States, and a majority of these public lands lie within the borders of Berkshire County. With 21 parks scattered across mountains, valleys, streams, and forests, the adventure possibilities are endless.
  • Starting from the village of Monterey, bike north into the pastoral and peaceful Tyringham Valley. Nearby opportunities to extend the ride include the Lake Buhl Road between Monterey and Great Barrington and the Monument Valley Road between Stockbridge and Great Barrington. The ride ranges from 20 to 40 miles.
  • From the hamlet of Mount Washington, take the spur trail to the Appalachian Trail. Camp at picture-pretty Sage's Ravine, cross Mount Everett, and descend down the steep, rocky Jug End, where you can reward yourself with blueberries in mid-summer.
  • Watch beavers at work at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Dig for dinosaurs at the Berkshire Museum.
