  • Creep yourself out at the grave of Baltimore's most famous writer, Edgar Allan Poe, located in a graveyard on Lombard Street. Tours of Poe's aunt's home, where he lived and worked in the 1830s, run year-round. Local actors perform his work every Halloween.
  • Fight through the crowds at the famous Inner Harbor to see the National Aquarium—where visitors can view more than 16,500 specimens. Make a plan of attack beforehand with their online trip planner.
  • Sports fans of any stripe should check out the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum and the nearby Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards. Walking distance from the stadium, the museums offer both interactive and historical exhibits, and cost just $12 for admission to both.
  • Take a water taxi from the Inner Harbor to Fell's Point. Maryland's first National Historic Site hosts great dining and shopping along its cobblestoned streets.
  • Fans of Homicide: Life on the Street or HBO's spin-off hit, The Wire, might think twice about heading to this city on account of its reputation for crime. Areas of West Baltimore are still best avoided, but tourist centers are generally safe.
