Martinique Beach Travel Tips

  • Early summer to early fall tends to be the warmer and wetter time of year on Martinique, although year-round temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s vary little and the local trade winds, called les alizés, keep the air nicely circulating.
  • The drier season for beach-lazing spans from December to May, but beaches may be busier during this time, especially when Europeans take their winter vacations.
  • The main town of Fort-de-France, although brimming with color, doesn't have much in the way of beachside accommodations. However, a short ferry ride from here takes you to the beaches at Pointe du Bout.
  • Avoid expensive taxis when exploring the island's beaches. Although there are larger buses (grands busses) and smaller taxi shuttles (taxis collectifs), the easiest and most flexible option is renting a car.
  • Stick to swimming in the ocean, since there is a risk of the waterborne bilharzia infection if you go into fresh water.
  • Don't worry about downing your glass of French wine at the beach: It's perfectly legal to have an open container in public on Martinique.

Beach Overview: Martinique

Martinique has so much to offer visitors, from stunning scenery to old fishing villages lining the coasts, rainforests and black sand beaches in the north, small mountains in the center, and arid beaches and nature preserves in the south. The island is nicknamed the Isle of Flowers—there's no lack of botanical gardens tucked into the rugged landscape. Other natural highlights include the Caravelle Nature Preserve, the wide undeveloped beaches of Les Salines, and the town of Le Prêcheur and its volcanic hot springs. The island explodes for a great Carnival celebration, known locally as Vaval, with each village on the island getting involved with costumes and floats. You won't be disappointed by the array of options for lodging, from huge resorts to hidden B&Bs to Gites de France&3151;apartments, studios, and guest rooms for rent in friendly, private homes.
