Acadia National Park Overview

It's not hard to fathom why Acadia is one of the biggest draws in the national park system. Its landscape offers a rich tapestry of rugged cliffs, restless ocean, and quiet woods. Acadia's terrain, like so much of the rest of northern New England, was carved by glaciers 18,000 years ago. A mile-high ice sheet shaped the land, scouring valleys into U shapes, rounding many of the once-jagged peaks, and depositing boulders around the landscape, including the famous 10-foot-high Bubble Rock, which appears to be perched precariously on the side of South Bubble Mountain.
