Baton Rouge Travel Tips

  • Fill up on fried catfish, jambalaya, gumbo, and shrimp etouffee at one of countless Cajun restaurants across the area. Among the local favorites is Boutin's, which has nightly Cajun music and a deck overlooking the bayou.
  • Step into the Old South on a day trip to some of Louisiana's historic plantations, including nearby Nottoway Plantation, and centuries-old Destrehan Plantation. With its stately main house, slave cabins, and swamp tours, Evergreen Plantation in Edgard also makes a good trip.
  • Play blackjack on the banks of the Mississippi at two riverboat casinos: the Belle of Baton Rouge and the Hollywood Casino. They also have an array of slots and other table games.
  • Celebrate Fat Tuesday in Baton Rouge, where Mardi Gras is smaller than in the Big Easy but still substantial, with parades and parties in and around downtown.
