  • The main anchorage is at Great Harbour, with various onshore shops offering ice, groceries, and other supplies, plus restaurants and modest hotels.
  • If the buoys at Great Harbour are full, try Little Harbour and Sandy Spit to the east or White Bay to the west.
  • If you're leaving the British Virgin Islands it's quicker and easier to clear immigration and customs on Jost Van Dyke than on Tortola.
  • Foxy's BVI Bar & Restaurant is a lively joint and a Jost Van Dyke institution—a must-visit for anyone stopping in Great Harbour.

Jost Van Dyke Overview

This 10-sq.-km (4-sq.-mile) rugged island (pop. 150) on the seaward (west) side of Tortola was named after a Dutch settler. In the 1700s, a Quaker colony settled here to develop sugar-cane plantations. (One of the colonists, William Thornton, won a worldwide competition to design the Capitol in Washington, D.C.) Smaller islands surround this one, including Little Jost Van Dyke, the birthplace of Dr. John Lettsom, founder of the London Medical Society.
