A few decades ago, this town of 200,000 was the "Dodge City" of Israelonly the adventurous came here to work and live. Today, Beersheva is the capital of the Negev, and a sprawling city with wide-ranging neighborhoods of detached and semi-detached homes surrounded by increasingly lavish gardens, as well as large blocs of housing projects. The ever-expanding Ben Gurion University rivals the universities at Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa, and is the pride of the city. But the region still doesn't have enough jobs for its people, and Beersheva, like other towns in the Negev, still faces serious economic problems.
