From Haifa the favorite road to Tiberias (Teverya in Hebrew) is the one from Nazareth, if only for that dip in the road and that sudden unfolding of the mountains when the Kinneret, aka the Sea of Galilee, is suddenly spread down below you. It happens best on a clear day, about 8km (5 miles) from Tiberias. Arab villages are sprawled on the hillsides, and sabra cacti, with their dangerous spiked arms and little orange fruits, line the road's edge. Then you round a bend and there it is—an incredibly beautiful azure lake set like a jewel in a pastoral valley.
