Caribou-Targhee National Forest Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • The Big Hole Range southeast of Rexburg is the primary off-road playground in Targhee. Follow Heise Road upstream along the Snake River to access more than 40 miles of ATV trails via the Burns Creek Drainage. Routes include a rugged drive across the spine of the range, topping out near 9,000 feet on Garns Mountain.
  • Access the Big Holes from the east at several points along the Victor-Cedron-Bates Road west of Driggs and Victor. Follow the Mahogany Ridge for five miles to reach the 8,700-foot peak of Red Mountain and see the southern half of the Teton Valley unfold like a great green quilt.
  • South of Victor, Highway 31 (arbitrarily) separates the Big Holes from the Snake River Range. Most of the northern Snake River Range is closed to motor vehicles—except for a 30-mile web of canyons and gulches southwest of Fourth of July Peak. Head south on Forest Road 253 for access.
  • The Snake River Road branches off from Highway 26 west of the river near Swan Valley. Follow it upstream toward Palisades Reservoir to find multiple forest roads that access a network of motorized trails through mellow western foothills.

Caribou-Targhee National Forest Overview

The Targhee is a national forest of contrasts. Its more than three million acres encompass semi-desert; sagebrush-dotted, arid land; and house timbered highlands and peaks rising over 10,000 feet. And don't forget the abundance of streams, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, and two wilderness areas. The forest is located mostly in Idaho, with a small portion in Wyoming, and it borders Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Read More
