Sun Valley Fishing Travel Tips

  • The most renowned stretch of water for Sun Valley anglers—on account of its abundant insect hatches—is probably Silver Creek. Visit the Nature Conservancy's Silver Creek Preserve southeast of Ketchum, about seven miles east of the junction of Highways 75 and 20.
  • Browns, brooks, and rainbows inhabit the Big Wood River, accessible in numerous spots along Highway 75 between Ketchum and Magic Reservoir. Try the tailwater just below the Magic Dam—the area occasionally lives up to its name.
  • Head east from Sun Valley over the Trail Creek Summit to get at the Big Lost River, which, together with its feeder streams, boast some of the state's most fertile water. Head south at Highway 93 to below the Mackay Reservoir, where you'll find anglers nymphing for rainbows throughout the year.
  • Duck into the breathtaking alpine valley known as Copper Basin by hanging a right at the rugged Forest Road 135 from Trail Creek Road. A number of streams, including the East Fork of the Big Lost, house trout and mountain whitefish, but it's the solitude that really sells this isolated area.
  • Though it's a little farther afield, many Sun Valley outfitters lead float-fishing trips along the Salmon, north of the valley near Stanley. Ask at your hotel for help selecting an outfitter.
