Ask about the local artifacts and traditional handicrafts that decorate the hotel. Many have stories behind them that can light up young eyes.

Said to be a favorite of Everest explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, this has been one of the country's best hotels since opening back in the 1970s. Then, it was housed solely in an impressive 100-year-old palace that is still home to 120 of the rooms today. It has been joined more recently by an architecturally sympathetic addition, the Durbar Wing, which boasts another 150 rooms. Facilities that are handy for families include a shopping arcade for stocking up on essentials and letting teenagers browse and two swimming pools. For older children, there is a gym with a sauna. In a country notorious for poor Internet connections, you can also rent PCs to take back to the rooms, where kids can surf to their hearts' content. There are four dining and drinking options. The Sunrise Café, just off the lobby, works well for families with a range of international dishes and regular buffets, while the Baker's Basket bakes up fresh pastries and cookies that go down well with younger guests.
