Stock up in Bocas town before heading to Punta Caracol--a couple jugs of water, a liter or two of soda, and a bottle of your favorite alcoholic drink will save you from having to buy the resort's overpriced refreshments. The pina coladas are worth the splurge, however.

Let's be clear: Punta Caracol is not for everyone. If you're looking for marble bathrooms, five-star meals, and constant activity and interaction, you'll be disappointed. This is a place to relax with a stack of good books, taking the occasional cool dip or guided tour, but mostly reveling in the resort's uncommon beauty and utter tranquility. Resort may even be too strong a word: Punta Caracol consists of nine wood cabins built on stilts over the ocean, connected by a long pier. From above, it looks like a pearl bracelet extending into the glassy blue Caribbean water. Each cabin has a bedroom upstairs and a sitting room and private veranda on the bottom, from which you can jump in the water for a swim or snorkel. The lodgings are basic, with no air conditioning, TV, radio or phone; there's no beach, spa, or pool either, and town is a 20-minute boat ride away. Hiking and boating tours can be arranged, and canoes are available for exploring the lush coastline and do-it-yourself
