Speedboats shuttle 23 times a day from the Vaitape small boat harbor to this posh resort on the northern end of Motu Toopua, a hilly island facing the rounded peak of Mount Pahia (not Mount Otemanu's tombstone). The main building, under three interlocking thatch roofs, holds a reception area, a bar, and a gourmet restaurant. To the rear, an expansive stone deck surrounds one of French Polynesia's largest swimming pools, where you'll find another bar and daytime restaurant. Long piers with hand-carved railings lead to the 44 overwater bungalows, while the rest of the units sit ashore in tropical gardens. One is a two-bedroom villa well suited to well-heeled families. Three of the beachside bungalows—one of which has a Jacuzzi tub—interconnect to form suites. The units are so close together that, unless you run your air-conditioner, you can overhear your neighbor's favorite TV show (not to mention certain amorous activities). For the most part, the
