Though the emphasis here is on more subdued luxury with a world-class spa and golf course (complete with a floating green), the staff of the resort will bend over backwards to set you up for more high-adrenaline adventures. Ask for maps to nearby hiking, biking, snowmobiling, and horse trails at the concierge desk. And the resort knows where to send you for any trip you need to outfit.
Ask when making reservations about designing your own adventure package. You can get special rates and a master-planned itinerary by letting the resort take care of your paddling tour and biking trip, in addition to your food and lodging.
If you're iconoclastic enough to bring your own watercraft to a place like this resort, call in advance and ask the marina about storage space.

The resort leads three-hour horseback rides through the forests outside of Coeur d'Alene.
Guided lake-fishing and fly-fishing trips are available to guests, as are lessons and mooring space at the adjacent marina.
Independence Point on Lake Coeur d'Alene, just a couple of blocks south of the hotel, is a popular place to watch for waterfowl.

Dominating the waterfront skyline like a medieval castle, the Coeur d'Alene Resort is really sort of the upscale lodging option in the city, unrivaled in terms of amenities, activities, and service until you make your way up to the swank resorts of Sandpoint to the north. There's very little you can't do here, and you get that impression rather quickly paging through the brochure. But on the off chance the resort isn't offering a trip or package based around your favorite activity, just ask to have them put something together. The squat cylindrical fireplaces and flat screens are very mod if you have the deep pockets for a premier room, but the basic hotel-style rooms are sufficient as well: tasteful, spacious, and always clean. Of course, the lake view is where it's at, but you can save a few dollars by opting to look out over the city.
