Once a country home for the kaiser during World War I, this has been turned into a charming, welcoming hotel that appeals to traditionalists. Operated by the Dorint chain, the hotel and its spa are reason enough to go to Aachen. Both the public and the private rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, resting under tall ceilings. An antique and conservatively modern decor is successfully blended. Rooms are furnished comfortably and attractively, each with a private bathroom with tub and shower. Many guests use the hotel as a spa, and it has a Royal Spa with a pool, Turkish bath, Finnish sauna, bio-sauna, ice grotto, and solarium, along with beauty-treatment rooms. The drinking and dining facilities are first class; the finely tuned Mediterranean and international cuisine is served in both an informal and a formal environment. The Elephant Bar, which has a cigar humidor, is a great spot for a drink.
