The Bear Hotel is one of the six oldest coaching inns in England, dating from the 13th century. The half-stone structure is located in the center of Woodstock. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, at the height of their tempestuous romance in the 1960s, stayed in the Marlboro Suite, an attractively decorated sitting room plus a bedroom and bathroom. According to legend, one of the chambers of the hotel is haunted. Rooms come in a variety of sizes and styles, but each offers grand comfort and a mix of modern luxuries with antiques; nine of the rooms contain four-poster beds. Bedrooms have recently been refurbished and contain well-kept bathrooms with tub/shower combinations. The hotel continues to maintain high standards of innkeeping. Blazing hearth fires are found throughout the hotel when the days and nights are cool.
