The Spread:
The 490-room Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch blooms in a Sonoran Desert setting of flowers and cacti, plus a two-and-a-half-acre water playground that includes ten swimming pools, scores of fountains, and 47 waterfalls. Kids could spend all day whirling down the three-story waterslide and playing along the sandy beach at the shallow end of one pool. Adults like the cold plunge pools, the golf course, as well as Spa Avania, a 21,000-square-foot facility that debuted in July 2005.

The resort's Camp Hyatt Kachina goes way beyond mere babysitting by engaging kids with activities that reflect Arizona's culture and landscape. Ages three to five and six to 12 make rain sticks, do Navajo bead art, try Mexican weaving, craft warrior shields, create dream catchers, form clay pinch pots, and go on lizard scavenger hunts. Kids also visit the outdoor garden to see how corn and cotton grow. The program operates Sunday to Thursday 9 a.m. to noon ($30) and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. ($40). On Friday and Saturday, the program runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ($120 with lunch and dinner) with shorter options as well. Over spring break, Labor Day, and Christmas, the extended daily hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more insight into Indian cultures, visit the resort's Native American and Environmental Learning Center staffed by Hopi cultural interpreters who'll gladly explain how corn and farming are central to Hopi lives.

For another side of Arizona history, take young kids to dig in the dirt for buried pyrite and amethyst at the resort's Lost Dutchman's Mine play area ($15). Also, take time to soak up the desert landscape on jeep tours, a mountain bike, or a horseback ride.
