  • Looking for things to do in Hilo, the Big Island’s main commercial and tourist hub? The folks at the Big Island Visitor's Bureau can help. Within walking distance from there is the Pacific Tsunami Museum, Lyman Museum & Mission House, and the Hilo Farmers Market (open year-round, Wednesdays and Saturdays).
  • Get a taste of nature at Rainbow Falls, and if you want, try climbing the nearby banyan tree. Go after a good rain to see the 80-foot single cascade in full flow. The falls are located a short drive from Hilo off Rainbow Drive.
  • Come out and watch the locals ride the waves at Honoli'i Beach Park, the only beach in Hilo good for surfing. There's not much to this exposed beach otherwise, including limited swimming, so head to Leleiwi Beach Park and Richardson Ocean Park for activities like snorkeling and body-boarding.
  • You don't need to venture far out of Hilo to find a nice cave to stroll through. Kaumana Caves has two miles to explore, and all you need is a flashlight and sturdy shoes. This cave is actually the skylight of a 25-mile-long lava tube formed by an 1881 flow from Mauna Loa.
