  • Get hooked at Waikiki Beach—rolling waves are consistent enough for beginners to catch their first thrilling ride.
  • Hit Sunset Beach for prime surfing on the North Shore; waves reach 15 to 20 feet from September to April.
  • Check out Ehukai Beach Park, known for its high winter surf.
  • Catch a run and a shower at Ala Moana Beach Park. This 76-acre public space south of Waikiki Beach has good surf and restrooms, showers, concession stands, and picnic areas.

A time-honored sport, surfing originated from the ancient Hawaiians who considered it a symbol of social status and power. Royalty used surfing as a means of maintaining their strength, liveliness, and authority over their people. The sport was nearly extinct by the late 1800s, until a teen named Duke Kahanamoku and his friends breathed life back into it and promoted it worldwide. Now, Kahanamoku’s statue stands on the shores of Waikiki Beach and the beaches of Oahu are filled with surfers of all levels and styles. Read More
