Maui Parks and Outdoors Travel Tips

  • A guided horseback tour is a great way to learn more about the real Hawaiian culture. Hawaii is not just about the beaches and the Mai Tai's. It has a rich history in ranching and an even richer variety of terrain that begs to be explored on horseback.
  • In the early 1800s, the harbor town of Lahaina gained fame as a bustling whaling port. Today, the harbor is stilled lined with ocean vessels but they are of the diving, snorkeling, and whale- watching variety. A number of whale-watching adventures that specialize in all types of cruises leave from Lahaina. The best part is that once you are back on shore, you can head over to one of the many restaurants and bars and share your story over a cold Blue Hawaii.
  • By far, the most popular scenic drive on the island of Maui is the Road to Hana. The narrow road, which has more than 50 one-lane bridges and more than 600 hairpin turns, has some of the most breathtaking scenery on the islands. The road is very crowded, so an early start is highly recommended.
  • The Haleakala Highway is a road to the summit of an active, but not erupting volcano. The summit is more than 10,000 feet above sea level and offers one of the best views, but the drive up is just as impressive. One of my favorite drives is through the upcountry of Maui to get to the Haleakala Highway. This is a dramatic trip full of diversity. Not only are the views spectacular, the stops at the many flower farms or other growers are hidden treats.
