Kona Coast (Kekaha Kai) State Park Active and Adventure Travel Tips

  • The state park, also called Kekaha Kai, encompasses more than 1,500 acres of beach, dune, and wilderness on the Big Island north of Kailua-Kona.
  • Ala Kahakai Trail is a 4.5-mile trail leading to Kua Bay. Just past mile two, you come to Pu'u Ku'ili, a 342-foot-high cinder cone. At the top, you can scope out the coastline.
  • You can easily find hidden coves and your own spot of sand to get away from the crowds of resort beaches. Bring a picnic lunch and a book and make a day of it.
  • The adjacent Mahaiula Beach has fine, white sand and turtles and colorful tropical fish, which make for good snorkeling if you need a break from the trail.

Kekaha Kai (Kona Coast) State Park

This state park encompasses over 1,500 acres of beach, dune and wilderness areas on the leeward side of the Big Island. The park has some facilities: picnic area, restrooms, historic trail, but is largely undeveloped. Read More
