One of Guatemala's largest lakes, Lake Atitlán, situated in the Solola District, ranks as one of the world's most scenic. The misty blue water unfolds against a backdrop of three 10,000-foot volcanoes, Toliman, Atitlán, and San Pedro. Created by a massive volcanic eruption 85,000 years ago, the lake, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Guatemala City or Antigua, stretches 12 miles long and six miles wide with depths reaching over 1000 feet.   • Branch out by boat to various villages that dot the lakeside. San Marcos is great for its serenity and aura. Posada Schumann is fantastic. Walk upward for a terrace dining experience, complete with shooting stars. Settle on a price beforehand for a very informative historical tour via trike at Santiago. San Pedro beckons to cheap backpacking. While Panajechel can be fun, be sure to venture to the lake's villages for the charm and history of this remarkable place.
