  • The top spot for birding on Saint Simons is in the area known as East Beach. It will cost you a small charge to cross the bridge to get to the island, but once here you can park for free at the historic 1937 Coast Guard Station.
  • The Coast Guard Station is worth a visit, particularly as it is now home to the Coastal Encounters Nature Center. You'll find information here on birding, the area's beaches, and saltwater marshes. The center also offers daily tours and programs for individuals as well as groups.
  • Some of the birds you might see on Saint Simons? Common sightings include the American Oystercatcher, Bald Eagle, Black Skimmer, Laughing Gull, Least Tern, Northern Gannet, Painted Bunting, and various warblers.
  • Saint Simons' East Beach and Gould's Inlet have together been designated as one of 18 stops along Georgia's Colonial Coast Birding Trail. Other stops include three separate sites on nearby Jekyll Island, North Beach on Tybee Island near Savannah, and Cumberland Island National Seashore, on the Florida border.
