Atlanta Horses and Riding Travel Tips

  • Nearby state parks and the greater Chattahoochee National Forest offer Atlantans many equestrian opportunities. Fort Mountain State Park is an exemplary choice for horse enthusiasts. Located in the North Georgia Mountains, this park offers more than 30 miles of horse trails. Plus, it has an on-site stable for horse rentals. Highlights include circling the entire Fort Mountain and traveling to a waterfall.
  • Watson Mill Bridge State Park has more than 12 miles of bridle trails. The series of interconnected, color-coded paths border the South Fork River. An equestrian trailhead in the northeastern part of the park makes for a great jumping off point. The biggest loop will circle the park boundary down to South Fork River and return via Beaver Creek, undulating over piney hills rising between hardwood bottoms.
  • The Willis Knob trail system winds for 17 miles in the scenic Chattooga River Valley. Park off Warwoman Road and descend into the Warwoman Creek Valley to reach the Chattooga River. Travel north up the wild and scenic Chattooga River, stopping for a swim or picnic before turning away from the river and looping up Adline Branch.
  • Ride through the high country of the Cohutta Wilderness. Leave Three Forks Mountain Trailhead and head north on the Rough Ridge Trail to reach Jacks River. Travel downstream before climbing away from the water on the Hickory Ridge Trail. Complete your loop on the East Cowpen Trail, climbing back up to higher than 4,000 feet.
  • The 14-mile Lake Rutledge Trail is the centerpiece of the 22-mile equestrian system at Hard Labor Creek State Park. The paths, centered in the Hard Labor Creek valley, travel the riparian areas along the stream and the two lakes within the park, Lake Rutledge and Lake Brantley.

Atlanta Travel Guide

Some visitors come to Atlanta looking for Old South stereotypes — white-columned mansions surrounded by magnolias, owned by slow-moving folks with accents as thick as molasses. What they find is a lot more cosmopolitan and a heck of a lot more interesting. Read More
