Tahiti Sailing Travel Tips

  • The best time for sailing in French Polynesia is from April to June, when the easterly trade winds are consistent and the temperatures balmy. Winter in Tahiti occurs in July and August, with much cooler temperatures and strong southeasterly trade winds, while the rain and hurricane season happens from November through March.
  • Raiatea, the largest of the Leeward Islands and the second largest island in land area in the Society Archipelago, has become a principle sailing center for Tahiti, with good winds and great panoramas.
  • You can hire boats and crew easily in Papeete, which has the widest selection of both in French Polynesia. Be aware that nearby Moorea has only one marina and just a few places to anchor a boat.
  • For a rare opportunity to enjoy some luxury game-fishing on a sailboat, check out the 50-foot Taravana on Bora Bora. You can book half to full day trips that include excellent food. Hollywood celebs have been known to rent it out, so book early.

Tahiti is one island group within the sprawling 100-plus islands that make up French Polynesia. Tahiti's main island is located in the windward group of the Society Islands and is, confusingly, also named Tahiti. The sophisticated capital of Papeete is home to over 70 percent of the island chain's population. Most travelers touch down and spend time in Papeete or more often head to the well-branded isles of Bora Bora and Moorea.
