  • Anau, in the Bora Bora lagoon, is a great place to scuba dive with manta rays, and is an easy enough dive for beginners.
  • No need to bring scuba equipment with you to Tahiti—most resorts have rental gear and scuba diving programs, even for novices.
  • On the northern outskirts of the town of Vaitape on Bora Bora, TOPdive Bora Bora has some top-of-the line equipment and the best dive boats in French Polynesia.
  • You won't find many shipwreck dives in French Polynesia, but inside the Moorea lagoon there is one popular dive—simply called "The Wreck"—that is home to a wonderful artificial reef and a multitude of fish.
  • If you want to keep dry while viewing Polynesia's underwater life, check out the Bora Bora Lagoonarium, an outdoor aquarium with live rays and sharks.

Tahiti is one island group within the sprawling 100-plus islands that make up French Polynesia. Tahiti's main island is located in the windward group of the Society Islands and is, confusingly, also named Tahiti. The sophisticated capital of Papeete is home to over 70 percent of the island chain's population. Most travelers touch down and spend time in Papeete or more often head to the well-branded isles of Bora Bora and Moorea.
